It's so true. Capacity planning is dead. Virtualization and cloud have reinvented the way business - oops, I mean IT - provide services to customers. It's simple. Just make room for resources as you need it, right.
 
Read the two articles below for reasons why capacity planning is still vital in today's dynamic environment. Gartner analyst Cameron Haight explained what capacity planners and IT professionals need to do to remain relevant. He isn't too harsh on the industry or the profession. Also, check out how one customer used TeamQuest software to demonstrate that the total capacity of all guest virtual machines is lower than the total capacity of a non-virtualized host server. This exercise helped him suggest the appropriate hardware sizing to avoid performance problems as more customers used the system over time.
